The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has identified drug abuse as the major causes of security challenges in Nigeria, calling on all critical stakeholders to support the agency to tackle the menace.
Chairman of the agency Brig. Gen. Mohammed Buba Marwa rtd who stated this on Friday in Lokoja during a stakeholders meeting on the fight against drugs trafficking and abuse, described the ugly situation as a national tragedy that has become the nation’s number one problem.
General Marwa noted that bandits, kidnappers and many other persons engaging in issues of insecurity across the country are usually on hard drugs, urging Nigerians to join hands to end the menace of drugs abuse
He said the NDLEA is working majorly to fight against accessibility to drugs by seizing and destroying the supply of carnabis sativa and other related illicit drugs.
Marwa who noted that the NDLEA was committed to fighting the scourge of drug supply chain and to discourage the users of the drugs, stated that the drug demand consumption level of the country is alarming, insisting that all stakeholders have critical roles to play in bringing down the demand for consumption of drugs in the country.
The Chairman urged parents to be observant of their children and wards and also charged religious leaders to always use their platforms to preach against drug abuse.
Earlier in a welcome remarks, the Kogi State Commander of NDLEA, Commander of Narcotics, Alfred Adewumi, commended the repositioning of the NDLEA by Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa towards fighting the drug abuse syndrome to the bearest minimum, said the scourge has negatively impacted the society.
He said the Command in the State is not resting on its oars in the fight against use of illicit drugs in the State.
Stakeholders at the meeting including the persons living with disabilities, NCWS, NURTW, Civil Society Organisations and the Media promised to work with NDLEA to reduce the scourge drastically in the country.
The representative of National Road Transport Workers , Ibrahim Yahaya solicited the support of the agency in providing a device to the union that can detect the presence of illicit drugs in the luggage of travellers, noting that most often time drivers are at the receiving end whenever their passengers are arrested by the official of NDLEA.
