Real Madrid are searching for center-back alternatives after Leny Yoro chose to move to Manchester United, who offered Lille significantly more money to secure the transfer in the summer 2024 window.
Despite initial interest, it appears Yoro was not a top priority for Real Madrid. The club continues to focus on signing free agents or players on expiring contracts. Yoro would have been a free agent in 2025.
Real Madrid has a history of signing world-class center-backs for free. David Alaba contributed to the team’s Champions League victory in his first season in 2021/22, and Antonio Rudiger played a key role in their 2023/24 triumph after joining in 2022.
The club was linked to Borussia Dortmund free agent Mats Hummels, but according to Diario AS, Hummels does not meet Real Madrid’s criteria for a center-back. The club is only interested in defenders who fit their specific requirements.
Real Madrid has an opening in the center-back rotation following Nacho Fernandez’s departure to the Saudi Pro League. Although Nacho is declining, he was still somewhat effective. Hummels, despite being slower physically, remains mentally sharp and was crucial to Dortmund’s run to the Champions League final. However, at 35, Hummels offers no future upside. With Alaba and Rudiger both over 30, it’s understandable why Real Madrid prefers a different option.
Unless the right opportunity arises, Real Madrid is likely to remain quiet in the center-back market. This situation could improve Ferland Mendy’s chances of staying, despite a potential Alphonso Davies signing at left-back, as Mendy can also play centrally if needed.
